Comments:

The Sunset Dairy is located approx. 16 miles south of Burns Oregon on Weaver Springs Road.  This area is known as the Gateway to the Steens Mountain.  The dairy resides in Harney County which is the largest county in Oregon with over 10,000 square miles with over 300 days of sunshine per year and an average of 11 inches of precipitation.  With only 7,500 population and vast open country this is one of the last places left where an operation can expand and there is no water moratorium on wells to develop additional irrigated ground.  The dairy started construction in the fall of 1998 thru 2002, the current owner was milking up to 1200 head at one time. The milking parlor is a fully computerized transponder controlled Westfalia equipped double 20 herringbone. In addition to the main parlor there is a sick cow facility completely isolated and equipped with its own double eight herringbone system with a 1500 gallon holding tank. The dairy is permitted for expansion up to 3,850 animals supported by the installed manure and waste water management system that includes dry storage, sediment basins and a seven acre lagoon.  The lagoon system is also designed to pump through one of the farms pivots.
